Vans is giving its Old Skool 36 Pearlizex another outing, this time taking the embellishment-heavy silhouette into a nautical direction. The new “Yacht Club” colourway looks to sailing flags from around the world for inspiration.
The Pearlized series have already established its own identity within the Vans line-up, so this isn’t the brand’s first attempt at dressing up the classic silhouette with a bit more shine. For the latest version, the familiar combination of pearls and crystal details returns across a deliberately distressed upper. The worn-in finish makes it look as though the sneaker has already lived a life.
From Style 36 to Old Skool 36
Underneath all of that, there is still a serious piece of Vans history. Originally launched as Style 36 in 1977, the silhouette was only the second skate shoe Vans created and became the first to feature the now-iconic Sidestripe. The name Old Skool came in early ‘90s, before the model eventually became part of the Vans Classic family.
The latest version keeps those proportions but adds them into Vans Premium programme, which focuses on upgrading the construction and feel of classic models. A high-gloss sidewall, detailed stitching and considered materials give the sneaker a more elevated finish.
Caught in Paris
For the launch, Vans took the sneaker out into Paris, following DJ Hank Korsan during Fête de la Musique. The campaign captures the sneaker around music, people and the energy of one of Paris’ biggest celebrations of creativity.
The Old Skool is the perfect silhouette for the campaign. It is a pair that has always travelled well between different scenes, from skateboarding and music to streetwear and fashion.
