This coming week one of the most hotly anticipated releases is upon us. The Nike SB x CNCPTS orange lobster is the 6th iteration of the Boston based retailer collaboration with Nike SB. Infamous for a certain crustacean Boston has a long affinity with the lobster and its many loud colours. First released in 2008 in a red colourway the lobster dunk had a pretty mundane beginning and sat on the shelf in many stores for a short amount of time. This gold box dunk was the first of Deon Points wild collaborations with Nike and featured a tinged leather and red speckled overlay. The attention to detail on the shoe made it stand out from other releases, coming with signature blue bands and distinctive patterned sock liners they would quickly be seen by many as a collectors item.
Roll on 2009 and the rumour mill is ablaze on forums around the internet of a follow up release coming imminently. Hot on the heels of the Red lobster came a blue box dunk later to be known as the blue lobster. This second variety of the now famous “Lobster Pack” followed the exact same details although unsurprisingly in a blue colourway. Finished with the same signature bands, a blue & white sock liner and and neon laces, this pair was hotly anticipated and coincided with one of the most infamous SB releases in history!
The Yellow lobster is about as rare in dunk form as they are in real life. Only Friend & Family and SB employees came up lucky on this extremely limited production run. Rumour has it a very limited amount of these pairs were gifted to individuals queueing for the previous blue lobster at the CNCPT Boston store. Currently these pairs are almost unobtainable to anyone with 1 of the 36 recently coming up for sale at an eye watering £29,035 at Sotheby’s auction house.
Its a long time before we hear anything new about any lobster related dunk, Cncpts moved between different collaborations including the “Holy grails” and “When pigs fly” and it seemed the lobster pack had been all but forgotten. In 2017, 9 years after the last pair, rumours start circulating that a new green lobster was inbound and when 2018 comes around its confirmed the 4th and 5th lobster is upon us. This green pair was slightly different to its predecessor with a significantly lighter speckling and bright pink laces. The shoes included the now infamous claw bands and special pairs came in a distinctive CNCPT designed freezer box.
Closely following the green pair came the final (for now) lobster dunk for the 10th anniversary. This elusive purple lobster is the last of Deon Points currently released dunks and perfectly finalised the Massachusetts based retailers previous releases. Its relatively unspoken about that the lobsters in real life have never really been spotted in purple but instead pays tribute to both the red and blue colourways combined.
This leads us now to present day, 2022 where we marked the 20th Anniversary of the Nike SB dunk and following arguably the best year for dunks in history. After many whispers of a new lobster being made, it was finally confirmed that we will be seeing an orange variety of the CNCPTS dunk low towards the end of the year. Despite delays we are now expecting the UK release on December 3rd, just a few weeks before Christmas. This pair has been the most controversial as early leaked pairs contained a black lobster claw band, Deon himself has since suggested that they would be released with grey bands. With the CNCPTS store now decorated in preparation for the release, we can safely say that we are very excited for this incredible addition to the lobster pack and for the opportunity to catch them on our rotation!
