nanamica has partnered with Mēdeia2.0 on a new collaborative project centred around the work of legendary Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu, bringing together fashion, documentary photography and environmental commentary through a tightly curated capsule collection.
The collaboration coincides with the release of “Issue 06” from Mēdeia2.0, an irregular publication platform that explores global issues and contemporary culture through the combined perspectives of fashion and art.
At the centre of the project is “Plastics”, a powerful photographic series captured by Tomatsu along Japan’s Kujukuri coastline, documenting marine debris and the growing impact of pollution on natural environments.
Through the collaboration, these images are translated into wearable form for the very first time, appearing across a selection of T-shirts and tote bags that merge visual storytelling with everyday functionality.
Translating Shomei Tomatsu’s Legacy Into Fashion
Recognised as one of the most influential photographers of postwar Japan, Shomei Tomatsu built a body of work rooted in realism, social observation and the emotional aftermath of historical change. Across his career, Tomatsu explored subjects ranging from the lingering effects of war to the cultural influence surrounding American military occupation, establishing a visual language that continues to shape documentary photography today.
The imagery selected for this collaboration shifts focus toward environmental concerns, specifically the issue of marine pollution captured through debris scattered across the coastline. By translating these photographs into apparel, nanamica and Mēdeia2.0 create a direct connection between visual art and daily life, allowing the garments to function not only as fashion pieces but also as vehicles for awareness and conversation.
“One Ocean, All Lands” and nanamica’s Global Philosophy
The collaboration is further pushed by nanamica’s long-standing slogan, “One Ocean, All Lands”, a phrase that reflects the brand’s belief in global connection through nature, culture and design. The concept reinforces the idea that the ocean exists as a shared environment without borders, linking communities and ecosystems across the world regardless of geography or nationality.
This philosophy has remained central to nanamica’s identity since its inception. Built around the principles of “UTILITY” and “SPORTS”, the Japanese label has consistently focused on creating timeless garments that balance technical functionality with understated aesthetics. Rather than following temporary trends, nanamica positions its collections as long-term wardrobe staples designed to transcend age, gender and genre while maintaining a quiet sense of refinement.
Mēdeia2.0 and the Intersection of Fashion and Social Commentary
As an extension of Mēdeia1.0, the Mēdeia2.0 platform continues to explore how fashion and art can communicate urgent social topics in accessible and emotionally resonant ways. Operating through irregularly released issues, the project collaborates with artists from Japan and internationally to create publications and products that encourage engagement with global conversations through visual culture.
Its guiding statement, “It’s like a newspaper — unless someone picks it up, nothing will start in the first place,” reflects the project’s wider mission of provoking awareness and participation. Within this collaboration, clothing becomes an extension of that philosophy, transforming garments into objects that carry both artistic significance and environmental messaging.
