As the seasons begin to change, independent British designer Joshua Samuels returns with a Spring Capsule that feels like a continuation of an ongoing conversation. One centred around memory, wear and the possibilities hidden within garments that have lived before.
Since establishing his namesake label, Samuels has built hus practice around the reconstruction of vintage clothing, treating decades-old garments not as a reference, but as raw materials. His work rejects the idea that newness is a prequisite for desirability, instead finding value in imperfection, repair and the stories embedded within existing textiles.
Every piece is created using reclaimed vintage garments, some dating as far back as the 1950s. Samuels dissected and rebuild each donor piece into something completely new.
Familiar Signatures
The collection introduces a number of new silhouettes while continuing to evolve some of the brand’s most recognisable designs. Leading the release are the Funny Fam Jeans, a wider-leg trouser constructed from two seperate vintage Levi’s 501s. By combining multiple pairs into one garment, Samuels transforms one of denim’s most iconic silhouettes into something completely new, while keeping the character and ageing of each donor.
Elsewhere in the collection, the Bones Flannel revits one of the brand’s most recognisable motifs. Vintage plaid shirts are reconstructed with reclaimed cream knitwear appliquéd across the front, forming the now-familiar Bones graphic that has become synonymous with Joshua Samuels universe.
The FO Baggy 5-Panel Tee receives an update as well. Building upon earlier iterations, the new version takes from five seperate vintage donor garments, creating increasingly complex compositions of colour, texture and graphic placement. Alongside it sits the FO Baggy Crew, a crewneck adaptation of the designer’s best-selling FO Baggy Hoof, madd from vintage garments as well.
No two garments are the same, that’s what makes them unique. None can be replicated exactly. The same vintage T-shirt, sweatshirt or jeans can be used for multiple pieces, so every customer receives a unique fragment of a larger story.
Youth, Nostalgia and Growing Backwards
The accompanying campaign continues visual themes that have been important for Samuels’ work. Captured through a lens of awkwardness, nostalgia and youthful curiosity, the imagery expands upon the ideas first explored through the designer’s Brev video series.
Alongside the Spring Capsule Samuels’ also launches Personal Commission. A new service allowing customers to send their own garments directly to the designer for reconstruction into selected silhouettes. Family hand-me-downs, concert T-shirts, worn-out workwear, sportswear or garments with personal significance can be transformed through the same reconstruction process. The garments come baxk transfotmed, but the signs of wear, damage, imperfections, fadings remain intentionally visible throughout.
