In 2026, Vans marks 50 years of skateboarding by bringing back one of its most influential silhouettes, while also unveiling its most technically advanced Era to date. The return of the Skate Era feels like a recognition of the silhouette’s foundational rol in shaping modern skate culture.
Originally introduced in 1976 as the world’s first skateboarding shoe, the Era represented a turning point. Designed with direct input frim skate pioneer Tony Alva, the model wasn’t simply adapted for skateboarding, it was purpose-built. Reinforced stitching, padded collars and a focus on durability set a new benchmark for what skate footwear could be.
The Return of the Skate Era
The revived Skate Era stays true to its DNA. Low-profile, lace-up and instantly recognisable, the silhouette keeps its clean lines and padded collar that first made it a staple among California’s emerging skate scene in the late ‘70s.
Introducing the Skate Era WaffleCup™
This updated model represents Vans’ most advanced skate outsole technology to date. Built with WaffleCup™ construction, the shoe merges the structured support of a cupsole with the boardfeel and flexibility of traditional vulcanised footwear.
Underfoot, SickStick™ gum rubber enhances grip and durability, engineered to withstand modern skateboarding’s technical demands. DuraCap™ reinforcement strengthens high-wear areas, extending the lifespan of the shoe in key stress zones. Meanwhile, PopCush™ insoles deliver responsive impact cushioning, absorbing heavy landings without compromising board control.
Bridging Generations Through Campaign Storytelling
The Spring 2026 campaign begins in March with Tony Alva reintroducing the Skate Era to a new generation. From there, the narrative shifts into a more forward-looking vision. A sci-fi-inspired handoff sequence introduces the Skate Era WaffleCup™, visually representing the passing of knowledge and innovation from one era of skateboarding to the next. The storytelling bridges past and future, heritage and progression.
The campaign features members of the Vans global skate team, including Geoff Rowley, alongside Shiloh Catori, Diego Todd, Dick Rizzo, Daiki Hoshino, Junior Gutierrez and Pedro Delfino. Each rider brings a distinct style and perspective, demonstrating how the franchise continues to evolve across different skate scenes and geographies.
