Mizuno Revisits a Landmark Design with the Return of the Wave Prophecy 1

The Mizuno Sportstyle Wave Prophecy 1 is a sneaker that leaves a lasting mark through innovation. More than a decade after its original debut, the Japanese brand is bringing back one of its most technically ambitious silhouettes, revising the model that introduced full-length Infinity Wave cushioning and helped define a new era of performance footwear.

While the Wave Prophecy 1 first arrived in 2011, its story started much earlier. Mizuno’s Wave technology was originally introduced in 1997, forming the foundation of the brand’s pursuit of advanced cushioning and stability. Over the following years, Mizuno’s development teams continued refining the concept, working towards a full-length mechanical cushioning system capable of delivering greater durability, smoother transitions, and enhanced support compared to traditional foam-based alternatives.

The Innovation Behind Infinity Wave

The breakthrough arrived with the Wave Prophecy 1. Rather than relying on EVA foam throughout the sole unit, Mizuno developed a distinctive construction featuring two Wavd plates connected by a series of structural supports. This full-length Infinity Wave platform provided a unique balance of cushioning and stability while also extending the lifespan of the shoe by reducing compression over time.

The result was a silhouette that felt genuinely futuristic. Its visible mechanical sole immediately stood apart from anything else on the market, creating a visual identity that remains instantly recognisable today. Inspired by movement itself, the Infinity Wave tooling was engineered to guide the foot naturally from heel strike through to toe off, helping to create a smoother and more controlled ride.

From Running Innovation to Cultural Icon

Originally designed as a stability running shoe, the Wave Prophecy 1 quickly found a second life beyond performance circles. Its bold technical aesthetic resonates with sportswear and streetwear communities, particularly those drawn to innovative footwear.

For its latest return, Mizuno celebrates that cultural legacy through sn editorial shot on the streets of São Paulo, spotlighting the energy and individuality that have helped keep the silhouette relevant long after its performance-running origins.

Two launch colourways in red and blue are scheduled to release in June, with a third black edition to follow in August.
