London has always been a city where different creative worlds overlap, and Detroit Dyer-Miller has been his career directly within that space. A self-taught artist who began in graphic design and cover art, Detroit has worked with major names like Central Cee, Ice Spice and Trippie Redd before turning his attention back towards painting and fine art.
His practice has continued to evolve without settling into one particular discipline. Instead, Detroit moves between graphic design, painting and visual culture, using each medium go explore ideas around identity, morality and the human condition. That versatility has become one of the defining elements of his work.
MALLET London was founded in London in 2015 and has built its identity around bringinv luxury craftmanship into the reality of modern city life, with the brand describing itself as sitting between London’s tailoring tradition, street culture and constant movement. Its signature metal heel clip has become one of its most recognisable design elements.
The relationship with Detroit also forms part of a wider period of development for MALLET. The brand has described its current direction as a new phase focused on deeper connections with art and culture, with Detroit becoming one of the creative figures helping shape that next chapter. MALLET first previewed the collab in Paris in 2025, where Detroit transformed its Galleries Lafayette space with a live painting performance and produced hand-painted limited-edition GRFTR sneakers.
Introducing the Detroit Loafer
The footwear collection starts with the Detroit Loafer, a new silhouette for MALLET, named in honour of the artist. The choice of a loafer is important. Detroit’s work is usually energetic and graphic, while the loafer, as a silhouette, traditionally sits on the more formal end of a wardrobe. Uniting these two worlds gives the collaboration an interesting tension.
The design provides a more formal counterpoint to Detroit’s expressive visual language, creating an interesting meeting point between traditional footwear and contemporary art. Its connection to the artist goes beyond the name, becoking one of the central pieces through which his creative identity enters the MALLET universe.
Alongside it sits the Clayton splat, an establishes MALLET silhouette that has been reinterpreted specifically for the collaboration. The Clayton already carries a deliberately substantial profile, with a chunky, skate-inspired low-top construction, rope laces, a padded collar and MALLET’s signature diamond branding. Curreng Clayton Splat editions use LWG-certified leather, suede and a bespoke three-part rubber outsole.
The Splat treatment is very relevant to Detroit’s work. MALLET uses a hand-dipped finish across the toe and outsole, meaning the surface treatment becomes part of the physical construction of the sneaker. Due to the hand-dipped treatment MALLET and Detroit can ensure that every pair is individually finished and differences can occur between pairs to create a unique element.
“I Bleed Purple”
Colour plays a massive role throughout the collaboration, with purple being yhe main visual thread.
The colourway behind the Clayton Splat is rooted in Detroit Dyer-Miller’s own creative identity. The purple treatment comes from the artist’s self citation, “I bleed purple”, a phrase that has become closely associated with the way he describes and sees his own visual world. Detroit uses purple as a personal signature.
Detroit’s Graphics Move Into Apparel
Besides the footwear offering, the collection also offers a selection of graphic T-shirts and lomg-sleeve tops.
This apparel collection gives the artist another canvas to put his creativity onto, allowing hus graphics to exist outside the gallery and fit alongside the footwear. As with the shoes, the pieces are created to sit naturally between Detroit’s crestive world and MALLET’s London identity.
