London-based designer Joshua Samuels is back with More Rubbish, the zecond instalment of his Rubbish Collection. Following the first four-piece release, the new collection expands the idea into six pieces, all made from old clothes, discarded materials and fabrics that already exists.
This time around, Samuels loosens the formula tho. The first Rubbish Collection established a clear idea around making new clothes from unwanted clothes, scraps and offcuts. More Rubbish keeps that same principle intact but uses it more as a starting point for a wider exploration of silhouettes and reconstructions.
The collection includes the Baby Tee, Funny Fam Trou, FO Baggy Zip Hood, Shit Shirt, Old Tee and Rotten Apple Beanie.
Going Smaller With the Baby Tee
The biggest shift comes with Baby Tee, which pushes the brand into a silhouetteit has not previously explored in quite this way.
Each one begins with a true vintage T-shirt individually selected from the brandms archive. Instead of buying bulk blank baby tees and decorating them, Samuels completely deconstructs the original garment before reconstructing it into a much smaller shape. The result is snug through the body, cropped in length and finished with deliberately short sleeves.
Interestingly enough, the original character of each vintage T-shirt reamins. Its colour, graphics, fading, wear and imperfections all survive the transformation, meaning no two finished Baby Tees are exactly the same.
The SHIT SHIRT Is Exactly What It Says
Then there is the appropriately named Shit Shirt. The concept is almost agressively simple: it is a vintage shirt with SHIT SHIRT sewn across the front.
Each piece starts with a true vintage shirt before the lettering is appliquéd onto the front using materials cut from vintage knitwear and Dickies. The materials are selectex around the individual garment, allowing each finished piece to develop its own character.
The Old Tee follows a similarly direct idea. Each starts with an archival true vintage T-shirt and receives OLD TER lettering cut from deadstock felt. Again, the colours are selected individually to work with the original shirt’s graphics, fading and overall character.
Six Pieces From What Already Exists
The contrast between the tiny Baby Tee and the oversized FO Baggy Zip Hood Sums up what More Rubbish is trying to achieve. On paper, the two silhouettes couldn’t be further apart. One is fiyyesmd cropped; the other is enormous. For Samuels, however, they represent the same exercise: taking clothing that already exists and discovering how far it can be pushed.
That same philosophy runs through the rest of the collection, including the Funny Fam Trou and Rotten Apple Beanie. The More Rubbish collection continues the designer’s ongoing attempt to find new possibilities within the enormous amount of clothing that already exists. Sometimes that means making something bigger. This time, it also means making something much smaller, and occasionally it means putting SHIT SHIRT across the front of an old one.
