There is a lot of SZA in Vansza. The new collection turns the singer’s way of looking at the world into a broader design language, bringing together instincts, creativity, exploration and a healthy sense of play. Across footwear and apparel, classic Vans shapes are reworked alongside entirely new silhouettes, personal references and tactile details that make the collection feel closer to SZA’s own wardrobe than a normal collaboration.
“This collection is really a reflection of how I live and what inspires me every day. I wanted to create pieces that feel comfortable, functional and expressive, whether you’re on a trail, in the city or discovering something new about yourself. Working with Vans gave me the freedom to explore ideas rooted in creativity, curiosity and play, and my hope is that people feel inspired to step outside their comfort zone, trust their instincts and have fun making something uniquely their own,” SZA explained.
A New Direction for Vans Footwear
The biggest departure comes in the form of the Vansza LX Tabi Hiker (Drop 2), an entirely new silhouette for Vans that puts the brand into unfamiliar territories. Built with exploration in mind, the design combines a distinctive split-toe construction with outdoor-ready functionality, while SZA has selectedd the expressive colourways herself. It is a big move away from the label’s traditional skate-led designs, but they still feel connected to Vans’ willingness to experiment with alternative constructions.
SZA also turns her attention towards several established Vans silhouettes. The Vansza Knu Skool Mule (Drop 1) transforms one of her favourite Vans styles into an easy-on mule, giving the chunky Knu Skool shape a more relaxed everyday function. The Vansza Knu Skool (Drop 2), meanwhile, leans into natural textures and field-inspired references, releasing with RealTree camouflage, interchangeable lace options and custom details.
The Vansza Authentic Kickdown (Drop 1) takes an even more personal approach. Featuring custom artwork by Sage Adams, distressed canvas and a collapsible heel, the shoe is inspired by SZA’s lifelong havit of stepping on the backs of her sneakers. Here, an everyday habit becomes an intentional design idea, turning the Authentic into something that can be worn traditionally or slipped on with the heel folded down.
Workwear, Art and SZA’s Personal Archive
The footwear collection is accompanied by an apparel release that draws heavily from SZA’s personal style and the objects that surround her. Relaxed proportions, tactile materials and more unexpected details give the pieces a lived-in quality.
One of the most unusual pieces in the collection is the Vansza Workwear Trompe L’Oeil Fleece Set (Drop 1). A well-worn workwear jacket from SZA’s own collection that has been transformed into a photorealistic print across a crewneck fleece and matching sweatpants. It essentially creates the appearance of a complete workwear outfit while still keepijg the softness and comfort of fleece. SZA describes it as her answer to traditional workwear: “I love workwear but sometimes it’s just uncomfortable to move around in.”
The Vansza Denim Hunting Jacket and Multi-Pocket Denim Pant (Drop 1) continue that utility influence through washed denim, oversized proportions, contrast corduroy and exaggerated pocketing. Elsewhere, the Vansza Outdoor Oversized Short appears across both drops, while original watercolour artwork from Sage Adams adds another artistic layer to the collection.
Vansza Arrives in New York
Before the first drop reaches Vans stores and Vans.com, Vansza is being introduced through an immersive experience during New York Fashion Week. The activation brings together the collection’s themes of nature, intuition and self-discovery, giving the visitors an opportunity to step inside the world that informed the collaboration.
The experience opens to the public at 260 Bowery, New York, NY 10002, on September 10 from 2pm to 8pm and September 11 from 12pm to 4pm. It offers an early look at the collection’s visual and sensory world ahead of its wider campaign and release.
