Sean Wotherspoon Reimagines Silver Oak’s Iconic Label for Limited-Edition Cabernet

Sean Wotherspoon is taking his distinctive approach to vintage Americana somewhere slightly more unexpected. The designer, vintage collector and creative director has teamed up with California winery Silver Oak on a limited-edition bottle celebrating the release of its 2022 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Limited to just 480 bottles, the collaboration marks the first time in Silver Oak’s history that its signature bottle label has veen redesigned by an artist. Wotherspoon didn’t completely replace the design, instead, Wotherspoon worked within its established framework, introducing his own colour-heavy, graphic language to one of California’s most recognisable wine labels.

The project, titled “Joyful Kaleidoscope”, brings together two creative perspectives that are more closely connected than they might initially appear. Silvef Oak has spent more than five decades refining a consistent approach to winemaking while allowing each vintage to evolve, all while Wotherspoon has built a career around revisiting references and giving them a new and better perspective.

A New Perspective on a Familiar Label

At the heart of Wotherspoon’s artwork are two elements immediately associated with Silver Oak: the winery’s water tower and the oak tree. Wotherspoon surrounds them with bold block of colour and graphic shapes, transforming the label into something far more expressive while still keeping the architecture that made it iconic recognisable.

For Wotherspoon, however, the colour isn’t about simply creating a striking bottle. It forms part of a broader sensory connection between his creative process and the experience of nature.

“Nature has so much depth. You can start with the smell, which leads you to the colors you see and then to the textures you can touch and feel. Silver Oak carries these same qualities in their wine, bottles and labels. That same sensory journey you go through in nature is what I wanted to create with our project, starting with color,” said Wotherspoon.

Where Vintage Americans Meets California Wine

The collaboration also makes sense within Wotherspoon’s wider creative practice. His work has consistently drawn on vintage objects, Americana, archival design and the idea that something familiar can become exciting again when viewed differently.

Silver Oak similarly places a significant emphasis on continuity. The Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has been part of the winery’s story for more than 50 years.

For Silver Oak, the partnership also forms a much bigger effort of engage with the creative communities surrounding wine. By working with established artists and designers, the winery is opening its world to perspectives that exist outside traditional winemaking.

The Silver Oak x Sean Wotherspoon “Joyful Kaleidoscope” Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will be available from 31 August 2026, exclusively through Silver Oak while supplies last. With 480 bottles produced, the release will quickly sell out.
