OTW by Vans x Satoshi Nakamoto Tear the Vans Era 95 Apart

OTW by Vans continues its creative partnership with Los Angeles label Satoshi Nakamoto, introducing the Era 95 Gems, a collaboration that takes one of Vans’ most recognisable skate silhouettes into a rawer, more experimental territory. Built around deliberate wear, exposed construction and unexpected embellishments, the latest release treats imperfections as an essential part of the design instead of something to conceal.

The collaboration brings together Vans’ skateboarding heritage with Satoshi Nakamoto’s rebellious approach to clothing and footwear. Drawing on vintage Americana and underground culture, the Los Angeles-based brand approaches familiar silhouettes as objects that can evolve through wear and intervention. The Era 95 Gems follows that exact philosophy, preserving the low-profile design of the classic Vans Era while transforming its surface through exposed distressed layers and jewellery-inspired elements.

The canvas upper begins to peel away, foam remains exposed and the sidewall carries marks of deliberate distressing. All these elements add to the idea of creating a sneaker that has seen some wear and tear.

Tearaway Canvas Reveals the Checkerboard

The defining feature on the OTW by Vans x Satoshi Nakamoto Era 95 Gemsis its tearaway navy canvas upper. Beneath the outer layer sits Vans’ iconic checkerboard pattern, gradually revealed as the canvas is removed. The construction turns the act of wearing the sneaker into part of its visual identity, with the contrast between the outer fabric and the underlay creating a design that changes as it is exposed.

The deconstructed treatment continues around the collar, where exposed foam give the shoe a unfished edge. The collaboration puts these unfished edges at the front and centre, creating tension between the Era’s familiar proportions and its altered appearance.

A Worn-In Finish From Heel to Toe

The treatment extends down to the midsole, where a hand-wiped black-and-yellow finish creates a naturally worn-in patina. A distressed foxing stripe reinforces the archival look, giving the sidewall the appearance of a sneaker that has been handled, altered and lived in over time.

Underfoot, the translucent crystal outsole adds one final details. The name “Satoshi Nakamoto” appears through the transparent sole, becoming visible as the sneaker moves. It is a subtle signature that rewards a closer look, continuing the collaboration’s interest in details that reveal themselves gradually.

Despite the interventions, the Era keeps the proportions and low-top construction that made the silhouette a lasting part of Vans’ identity. The collaboration uses the familiar foundation of the silhouette to explore what happens when materials are deliberately disrupted and decorative elements enter the picture.

The OTW by Vans x Satoshi Nakamoto Era 95 Gems is priced at £180 with a release date of 16 October.
