For od.A, the introduction of the 001 sneaker is as much about looking forward as it is about understanding the foundations that shaped it. Rooted in the functional design codes of outdoor footwear from yhe ‘70s and ‘80s, the silhouette draws directly from a time when material limitations demanded clarity of purpose. Leather dominate, construction was clear and every decision served a purpose. That same mindset is what sets the 001 apart.
One-Piece Thinking
The one-piece construction philosophy is at the heart of the design, a method historically valued for its efficiency and resistance to the elements. Rather than fragmenting the upper into multiple overlays, od.A leans more towards a unified approach, allowing the structure of the sneaker to emerge from less, but more deliberate components.
That philosophy is immediately visible in the toebox, where a threaded seam runs across the front, dividing it into two distinct leather panels. Instead of being concealed, this seam becomes the vocal point of the shoe, beginning along the lateral side and closing at the toe.
Materials
Material choice plays a big role as well. The upper is made from full-grain calf leather, selected for its natural texture and ability to age over time. Its surface remains largely untreated, allowing wear to become part of the design. Hand-sewn construction further emphasises the connection between the maker and the object, leaving each stitch visible.
Underneath, the sneaker is grounded by a cork midsole, offering comfort and a subtle nod to traditional footwear methods. This happens while a Vibram outsole ensures a form of durability, that also offers grip.
The 001 is shaped by Eastern design traditions. As described by the od.A team, the approach takes parallels to one-piece garment construction seen in historical dress. Unlike Western tailoring, which usually builds form through multiple panels, this philosophy explores how shape can emerge from a single, continuous surface.
References can be traced through garments such as the Hanfu, Kimono and Hanbok. Pieces where fabric is folded and wrapped before it is layered and cut into complex forms.
Limited Availability
As this is the first expression of the brand’s philosophy the od.A 001 sneaker will release in extremely limited quantities ahead of its official AW26 launch. This early drop comes along with the Shanghai Fashion Week of this year.
