Mizuno Sportstyle Setsumasa Kobayashi Prophecy Ring Moc

Mizuno partnered with Japanese designer Setsumasa Kobayashi, founder of Mountain Research, previously known as General Research, to reveal the Wave Prophecy Ring Moc Setsumasa Kobayashi, a collaborative silhouette that continues one of the most influential intersections between outdoor culture, fashion design and performance footwear in Japan. The release builds on a creative relationship that stretches back to 2007, when Kobayashi and Mizuno launched the Infinity Moc, a shoe that challenged conventional footwear by fusing traditional moccasin construction with performance-inspired engineering.

The new collaboration reinterprets its core philosophy through the lens of Mizuno Sportstyle’s current direction. The result is a shoe that balances heritage craftmanship with technical innovation, positioning itself somewhere between outdoor footwear, lifestyle design and performance-driven functionality.

Traditional Moccasin Design Meets Wave Prophecy Technology

At the heart of the project is the fusion of a classic moccasin upper with Mizuno’s signature Wave Prophecy sole unit, one of the brand’s most recognisable technological platforms. While the upper keeps the relaxed visual language associated with traditional moccasin footwear, the sole welcomes a futuristic structure defined by its hollow Infinity Wave construction.

This combination allows the silhouette to deliver both cushioning and stability while maintaining the distinctive visual identity that has made the Wave Prophecy line one of Mizuno’s most celebrated technical franchises. The sole has also been engineered to minimise long-term degradation, ensuring performance and comfort remain consistent over extended wear.

Technical Construction

Although the shoe presents a relatively understated appearance, its construction is built around a series of highly considered technical details. A ring-shaped midfoot strap provides additional lockdown and support, while an internal structure derived from the Mizuno Sky Medal enhances fit and stability throughout the silhouette. Suede overlays are paired with mesh underlayers, creating a dual-construction upper that balances breathability with premium texture.

This layered approach reflects Kobayashi’s long-standing interest in functional design that avoids unnecessary visual excess. Rather than showcasing technology through overt branding or aggressive styling, the collaboration embeds innovation within the structure of the shoe itself, allowing performance elements to coexist with a quieter aesthetic language.

Two Colourways

The Wave Prophecy Ring Moc Setsumasa Kobayashi comes in two colourways that reinforce the project’s timeless character. One version combines brown and off-white tones, creating a softer and more organic look that highlights the moccasin influences within the design. The second colourway adopts a black and light grey palette, leaning further into the technical and contemporary aspects of the silhouette.

Both versions maintain the same balance between heritage and innovation, using muted colour blocking and premium materials to emphasise construction. This restrained approach aligns closely with Kobayashi’s design philosophy, which prioritises longevity and purpose over trend-driven aesthetics.
